In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
(Genesis 1:1-2 ESV)
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.
(Revelation 21:1 ESV)
Read Genesis chapters 1 through 3 and Revelation chapter 21.
The Bible is a unique book in many ways. It's a complete story written by many authors over thousands of years by people from diverse backgrounds and with amazing unity. It's a narrative of the fall of man-kind and how it has affected the world and everything in it. It's a story whose main character is Jesus - we see types and shadows of him throughout the Scripture. From Genesis to Revelation it points to our Redeemer and Savior, who created everything, and will ultimately restore all things back to their proper order.
In the beginning God spoke order into chaos. He created everything for a purpose. God placed Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden which means, 'a pleasant and delightful place.' Adam and Eve followed the advice of Satan and at that point everything began to unravel - the perfect peace they had experienced in the garden was gone. Feeling shame they tried to hide from God behind a bush. Dudley Hall says, "that all religions started behind that bush" - that is - works oriented, and shame based religion. People over the centuries have attempted to work their way back into the garden through religious rules and activities. A dark new world order began in that garden - one that doubted God's goodness and sought to replace Him with our own claim to divinity.
Man would become self-centered and perverse as his first parents were forced out of Eden. But Jesus has paid the penalty of the cosmic treason of the human race by his death on the cross. He brought a new creation and a new world order with him to the earth - the kingdom of God. Even though Satan is still at work doing evil in the world, Jesus' death and resurrection has started the process of bringing all the chaos on the planet back into perfect order and that will be complete upon his return. - Bobby
